Mike,
Thanks for putting the record straight.
The IDAG paper was submitted to J. Climate in Jan or Feb 04. So, it is a paper in
review ! It is also a review paper, so there is nothing you don't know about. The skeptics
have sent out the paper in outline in an email (with a location to get the whole thing).
It
is on Francis Zwiers web site. They found in a google search.
Tom Crowley has said they are being unethical and it may be illegal, but he's got
slammed for trying to hide the truth (or words to that effect). Another said it wasn't a
proper review as it didn't refer to SB03 and MM03/04 but just reiterated the hockey stick
!!
They said it didn't say don't cite, which is true. All goes to show that they know nothing
about the standards and ethics of publishing and reviewing.
I'm just glad they have not seen our RG paper yet. Their google search hasn't yet
found that and no-one has told them. I'm very happy to leave it that way. Dick Kerr
said he will mention it at some future opportunity.
Away all next week and uncontactable (probably) at the meeting in Blois. I'll be
talking
about the paper. The French press may be there, but I won't go out of my way to push the
paper.
Cheers
Phil

Hi Peter, Phil,
No, no, we have to set the record straight!
It was Jerry Mahlman who coined the term, and in a complimentary (not insulting) way,
several years ago. I think he used this term to simply point how dramatic the 20th
century warming is relative to the longer-term variability.
We have to make sure we don't let the climate change denialists co-opt the term. It
should be "re-claimed", so to speak...
Mike
p.s. anything in this "IDAG" paper I should no about at this point, in case something
erupts here?

Peter,
I've cc'd this reply to Mike as he may know for sure. I suspect it was someone like
Pat Michaels or Fred Singer. There was a meeting in DC where the term was first
said, probably about 1999.
Sorry this isn't much help. The term doesn't help the science at all, and giving
someone credit for saying certainly doesn't help.
Cheers

Hi Phil,
A quick question - do you happen to know who coined the "hockey stick"
term for the IPCC paleo reconstruction ? It's in connection with a
review I'm trying to do of a paper by Usoskin et al.
